Aesthetic, Artistic, Authentic
What does style mean to me and to this blog, beautifullynay?
Hey n,
You know the dreaded questions during high school: what do you want to do after this? What are you going to study? What are you going to be? You know how confusing those were.
It took me a while after high school to figure out what I wanted to do. I guess I’m not sure if that was because I was a deer in headlights at the thought of doing one thing for the rest of my life or because I honestly had no clue what was out there for me. The thought of choosing one thing, in particular, used to scare me a lot, although not so much anymore.
Anyways, the point of me going on this little diversion is because that’s how it got me to realize my three A’s. I remember sitting down trying to figure out what I wanted to do a couple of years ago, in the middle of that not-even-quarter-life-crisis. (hahaha yes the daunting early twenties). These words came to me, thinking about what really makes me passionate. What excites me? What out of all the different activities, careers I am considering, little weird things I enjoy doing sets my heart ablaze just enough?
It was then I discovered my three A’s that help define my joys and passions - what is important to me. When I incorporate my three A’s in my work, I can find joy in it no matter what the “career” or “industry”. In wanting to create @beautifullynay, I realized that I needed my three A’s to be involved so that it could truly reflect me.
Aesthetics: really, I love creating beautiful things. More-so than that though, I love making spaces look visually pleasing and therefore beautiful. I guess you see that in my home decor, the cards I make, or in the spaces I create. Recently I am seeing this aesthetic come to life on social media and how I can create a place that is visually pleasing and interesting. The accounts I manage might not be exactly my personal taste, but my personal account and @beautifullynay is for my own aesthetics to come out. This isn’t only in my style but also in the way I create the Instagram page. I love neutrals, sophistication, and classics with a bit of edge. I love soft colors with the contrast of a good B&W photo.
Artistic: You know that I have loved art for so long, and our shared love of painting too. I have seen, though, that I can be artistic outside of my usual outlets. I can be artistic in the way I style myself for the day, or the way I create a photograph. I love being able to create and start from nothing to make something. Do you know what I mean? I can’t wait to show my artistic side in the photos I take for @beautifullynay and show them to everyone. I want to challenge myself past simple photos and really strive for consistent, interesting art through photos.
Authentic: I can’t help being real and honest. It’s such a part of who I am and how I relate to you and others. Real connections and real community is so important to me, and that’s my hope out of @beautifullynay. I hope to add to and help build up the current community of men and women on the frontlines and backlines of sustainable style - and everywhere in between. For so long, I have been learning how much I don’t know and that I can be passionate and excited and learn and have my opinion - but still, I have so much more to learn. I guess I just want to participate in the move that’s already happening towards slow style and create a space where the community can be inspired, share, and grow alongside one another without having to be perfect! I want to share my passion and enthusiasm and learn from all the other amazing ones out there.
