Aesthetic, Artistic, Authentic

aesthetic - i love creating beautiful aesthetics and showing my aesthetic through my style and look. This also comes into creating a visual space through Instagram and my blog where I want to bring a beautiful and engaging visual aspect to the sustainable style community.

authentic - i believe in both myself and brands being truthful and real about clothing, style, and their process. That means that I will be honest about what I wear, how I buy, and my process. For the brands that I wear, support, and interview this means that I do my best to support brands who are real and honest by supporting the local economy and choosing sustainability and ethical practices. More than this, a community for me is something real and developed through being ourselves.

artistic - I like to bring my authentic and aesthetic side together with my artistic nature. There is nothing wrong with a simple picture, but I like to add my character into a picture and create art in how I capture and post on my blog and Instagram page.

about me…

Like most people, I have been made from my experiences and shaped by the people, places, and stories around me. I grew up on the West Coast of Canada and did not care too much about my style and clothing throughout my school years. I struggled to know what fit me and suited my body type or natural coloring. I was self-conscious as most young ladies were and dressed myself to try to blend in with the current fashions and my peers while also trying to feel confident. Even so, I loved to go thrift shopping and the thrill of the search and finding a unique piece that shone above the rest or truly was what I needed was a big passion of mine. I was a regular to the local thrift stores with my sister.

It was after high school that I watched ‘A True Cost’ on Netflix with a best friend of mine and my interest in the fashion industry and ethical practices was sparked. From then, my fascination and passion ignited and slowly burned throughout the next few years.

I went on a somewhat solo traveling experience, visiting Sweden, Germany, Austria, South Africa, Kosovo, Macedonia, Greece, and the UK. The same year I moved back to South Africa to study and be with my boyfriend at the time. During this year, an acquaintance was studying personal styling, and I was able to learn about myself - how clothes and my style was able to compliment my body and the way I have been made. My skin tone and the tone of my clothes mattered. The shape of my body could be accented in certain ways by my clothing choices. This added another dimension to my interest in style and its importance in our lives!

During my time in South Africa, where I lived for four years, my passion for local brands also flourished. My interest in discovering local brands, learning about them, and supporting them grew and grew. I found there is something so empowering about supporting a community you are living in or visiting. South Africa has a big culture of local businesses and brands which can be exciting but it relies on the support of its surrounding community to buy into them.

My outlook on style focuses on three A’s (aesthetics, authenticity, and being artistic), local brands who are embracing ethical and sustainable practices, buying and dressing based on your body and personal style.

Thank you for reading about my story, and why I am passionate about beautifullynay.

Why @beautifullynay?

My heart is that I would be able to inspire and equip you along this journey! Wherever you are in the journey of style and my focus of local brands, sustainability, and ethical choices, and travel-wise style - I want to bring you in and make sure you can learn and be a part of a community who doesn’t have it all together but who are trying. I am trying in the little choices and steps I take. I sure don’t have it all together, but I am inviting you to join me in working towards improving and becoming more confident in our style.

It might sound weird, but I genuinely like to have my picture taken and to take photos. I like being able to capture what I have been able to create with clothing and expressing my style. I also love people and creating real true connections that become a community. If I can facilitate more growth in the community of sustainable style, then I am happy!
